Lenten Chowder & Stations
Continuing a Tradition
Parishioners at the former Star of the Sea Parish in Squantum had a long tradition of "Chowder and Stations" during the Fridays of Lent. When the parish closed in 2004, Star of the Sea parishioners along with Sacred Heart parishioners wished the tradition to continue, so they jointly worked on preserving and augmenting "Chowder and Stations." 2013 will be the ninth season at Sacred Heart--the program continues strong to this very day.
During Lent, dinner begins at 6pm in the rectory conference room and the Stations of the Cross follow at 7pm in the lower church. Dinner includes: clam chowder or corn chowder, bread and butter, a light dessert and beverages. Recently, the menu has been expanded to include cheese pizza, baked macaroni, vegetable quiche, and other non-meat items.
A free-will donation is encouraged to help cover expenses. Remaining funds benefit the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Volunteers always are needed by assisting in cleanup, or by baking some simple desserts to share. You may call the rectory to volunteer, or send a note via our online contact form.
